Academic Services

Do you have what it takes to be in the spotlight?
Very few are the English teachers with a solid knowledge of English phonetics and phonology and how to apply this knowledge in a classroom packed with international students. Each student presents a challenge to the teacher who often fails to instruct that student on how to rectify a pronunciation error. Regrettably, this sometimes causes loss of interest in pursuing English learning and leads the student to avoid any form of interaction with an English native speaker in which he or she could experience a feeling of humiliation or embarrassment. The ESL or EFL industry is yet to acknowledge the cruciality of English pronunciation teaching and its bearing on the student’s confidence and motivation to learn English in general. Therefore, EPSR provides phonetic and phonologic services to NSW ELICOS schools, TAFEs and Universities. Those services aim to support the overall purpose and rationale of the course offered by the aforementioned academic institutions. EPSR academic services fall into two categories.
Category A: In this category, EPSR offers its services to:
- Learners of English as a second or foreign language enrolled in an ELICOS course
- Learners of English as a second or foreign language undertaking an AMEP course
- International students who need some assistance in doing their presentations at University without the fear of embarrassment.
Category B: In this category, EPSR offers its services to:
- Native or non-native English speaking students enrolled in a TESOL course
- Native or non-native English speaking ESL teachers currently employed or unemployed
Clients are required to specify the category in which they belong in order for EPSR to design a lesson or a series of lessons to complement and support the rational and objectives of the original course being delivered.
Here are some examples of how EPSR could assist in the ESL industry:
- EPSR can provide assistance to one or a group of international students who wish to improve their pronunciation specifically while doing their class presentations. In addition to avoiding embarrassment, the students can learn a great deal about their main pronunciation difficulties and acquire tips on how to solve them in the future.
- EPSR can provide a complementary lesson for students of TESOL courses wishing to gain some phonetic and phonologic knowledge that they can pass on to their future students confidently without any feeling of uncertainty or even frustration. EPSR can also prepare a presentation about the main problematic areas in English pronunciation for most Asian students such as Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese etc. This will arm the future ESL teacher with a solid background on the pronunciation problems of one of the ESL industry's biggest market.
- EPSR can deliver complementary lessons for students of ELICOS schools or AMEP to compensate for the lack of experienced ESL teachers with the in-depth knowledge to instruct and guide students through towards an effective solution to their problems. EPSR can provide those students with a thorough set of instructions that guarantee raising and increasing awareness of the most problematic areas in their English pronunciation with very clear and useful tips on how to overcome those problems and ultimately improve their English speech quite remarkably.
